EXPLORING THE CAVES

"A JOURNEY INTO THE UNDERGROUND WORLD OF THE PIC DU JER"

A guided tour of the highest visitor caves in France will take you into the underground tunnel of the Pic du Jer along a 360-metre-long easy-access path.

HISTORY OF THE CAVES:

20,000 years ago, when the glaciers melted, water infiltrated and hollowed out the Pic du Jer at its summit. Rock debris was deposited and blocked the bottom of the chasms as well as the natural entry at the start of the tour, leaving only a few metres through which to pass. Work was later undertaken to link up the various natural crevices and cavities situated under the Pic's summit. The caves have been open to the public since 1958.

A SUMMARY OF THE TOUR:

the tour route comprises 11 rooms along the length of the 360-metre tunnel. You can admire the most ancient to the most recent concretions (stalactites, stalagmites and curtains) and will be amazed by the chasms (the deepest one being 45 metres). will pass in front of large faults bearing witness to the formation of the Pyrenees.

On leaving the tunnel, a guide will tell you all about the surrounding landscape, rounding off what is sure to be a rewarding discovery of an underground world.
